What is Access Monash Mentoring?

The Access Monash Mentoring program is for Year 11 and 12 students at our partner schools who want to explore post-school options but whose families have limited experience with university study.

How does the program work?

Students are paired with an experienced and engaged Monash student mentor to work in a one-on-one mentoring relationship for the final two years of secondary school.

The program aims to create student-to-student connections, helping secondary students from low socio-economic (low SES) communities bridge the gap from school to university.

The mentoring sessions and activities are designed to help mentees explore and extend their interests and career and study options, develop future plans based on those options, as well as build their study techniques, goal-setting, effective communication, motivation and resilience.

In addition to our in-person mentoring program, we also offer E-Mentoring to students at our partner schools in Gippsland. E-Mentoring sessions are predominantly delivered online and over the phone, allowing students to participate regardless of their distance from our Monash campuses.

What are the benefits?

The program offers a unique double benefit: supporting current Monash students to develop their skills and give back to the community, while assisting aspiring senior secondary students to achieve in higher education.

Mentees benefit from the unique connection they develop with a successful Monash student who has recently experienced the challenges of VCE and the school-to-university transition.

Mentors benefit from the opportunity to develop leadership, public speaking and teamwork skills, and form valuable connections with senior Monash staff, alumni and community leaders. They are considered for the Monash Community Leaders Scholarship ($4000 per year). In addition, each year we select 25 Mentors to become Mentor Leaders. These students play a key role in training new mentors and providing ongoing support to the Access Monash team, and activity work to promote Access Monash through the university and wider community.
