Reflections on reciprocity in international clinical externships in law

Since 2013, THOUSANDS of Australian tertiary students have received funding under the Australian Government’s New Columbo Programme to travel to developing countries for short work/study periods within their University degree. It is accepted that the value of these trips to participating students is positive. But what about the impact on placement hosts and institutions? This paper will make suggestions based on the experience of Newcastle Law School staff and research into overseas clinical placement in fields such as social work as well as law that may contribute to the host experience being also overall positive.
