Teaching and assessing reflective practice: What are we assessing and giving feedback on?

We will host an interactive workshop focused on how to teach and assess reflective practice. We will provide a theoretical and practical background on teaching and assessing reflective practice, with a focus on scoring rubrics to evaluate reflective practice exercises. Participants will be welcomed to engage in a guided discussion to share key indicators that could be used in a scoring rubric for clinical legal education. We will provide model scoring rubrics and participants will use the rubrics and other indicators identified by the group to review and evaluate exemplars of student reflective essays. In doing so, we will also address how reflective practice scoring rubrics can help clinical legal educators promote student learning, the pursuit of social justice, and community service.
