The Monash Doctoral Program is a key element of the University's strategy to enhance its reputation as a global leader in graduate research. One of the first of its kind in Australia, it incorporates professional development into the delivery of the doctoral degree. It is a PhD designed to prepare graduates with the skills and capabilities sought by employers, giving them the competitive edge in an ever increasingly competitive employment market.
Students enrolling in the Monash Doctoral Program (MDP) will undertake one of the following three modes, as determined by their Faculty or particular program:
Yes. Recognition of prior learning can be applied if you have completed equivalent coursework or previous training. There are limits and exceptions to the amount of credit granted, under the Substitution and/or Recognition of Prior Learning procedure.
Credit or recognition of prior learning in relation to coursework units are to be considered as per the University's Credit Policy and supporting procedures.
Professional Development Activities/ Training
Recognition of prior learning for formal and informal learning can be considered where the previous activities/ training is equivalent to professional development training activities undertaken as part of the Monash Doctoral Program.
All PhD research projects are to be conceived from the outset as clearly achievable within 3 years equivalent full time, with students expected to complete their degree within 3 to 4 years equivalent full-time.
The professional development activities that comprise the Monash Doctoral Program should go ‘above and beyond’ the day-to-day activities (e.g., reading, writing, experimentation) and essential training (e.g., seminars, Occupational Health and Safety) associated with PhD study. Compulsory and/or Compliance modules are considered essential training and therefore do not count towards the hours of professional development required for the Monash Doctoral Program.
