Indigenous Strategy and Governance

Monash Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Framework (2019-2030)

The Monash Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Framework (2019-2030) is underpinned by the Monash University Act, 2009, in which the University commits to realising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander aspirations, safeguarding cultural heritages, and using expertise and resources to involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our teaching and learning.

The Framework has been developed to closely align with the University’s overarching strategy and its component education and research agendas. It is the first of its kind at Monash, pulling together all of our ambitions across the Indigenous space.

In the six years preceding the Framework the University was guided by two Reconciliation Action Plans for Indigenous matters at Monash, supporting the commitment to advancing the education and employment aspirations of Indigenous people:

Indigenous Advisory Council

The Monash University Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC) is an advisory body to the University.  The IAC reflects the views of Indigenous communities and advises Monash in relation to Indigenous programs. Specifically, in relation to Indigenous access, participation and success in education, research and employment.

The IAC was chaired by Professor Colin Bourke MBE who stood down in 2018. The membership and structure of the IAC is under review, and a new committee will be announced in the coming months. IAC members are chosen for their substantial knowledge, experience, and strong links with different Indigenous communities both locally and interstate.
