Monika Szunejko - Director, Resources and Technology

Monika Szunejko is responsible for the suite of library resources and technology services that deliver information resources to the Monash community, and oversees the Library’s collections, comprising 4.7 million print and electronic resources, and collections held in offsite storage. Her role has oversight of library services ‘from selection to shelf’ to ensure that the Library selects, acquires, describes, and delivers relevant information resources that support the University’s research teaching, and learning objectives. Ms Szunejko is also responsible for the Library’s resource sharing, authentication, and technology platforms that enable the Monash community to ‘seek, find, and get’ resources in a seamless discovery and access experience.

Professional background

Ms Szunejko has worked in academic, public, state, and Commonwealth government libraries in Western Australia, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria, and Wales (UK). Her professional background is in library technical services: cataloguing and acquisitions, library standards and systems management, and international metadata collaboration.

As the Director, Libraries Australia (National Library of Australia) Ms Szunejko was responsible for the Australian National Bibliographic Database (Australia’s national union catalogue), served on the OCLC Global Metadata Strategy Group, and contributed to services and programs of the National and State Libraries of Australia (NSLA).

Ms Szunejko has worked on a number of international library committees. As a result, she brings a global perspective to library services, recognising that all libraries are interconnected - through systems, data, collections, and community - and ultimately help people to access information anywhere and at any time.

Professional interests

Ms Szunejko serves on the Board of Directors of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). She is an elected member of the Bibliography Standing Committee for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and from 2013–2018 served on the Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) helping to establish the Oceania RDA Committee (ORDAC) in the transition to the RDA (Resource Description and Access) international governance structure in 2018. Ms Szunejko is a member of the American Library Association (ALA).

In 2016 Ms Szunejko was awarded a Travelling Fellowship by the Friends of the National Library of Australia. The fellowship funded research at the British Library and Bibliothèque nationale de France, investigating business cases pertaining to the implementation of linked data in national data sets.

Ms Szunejko is a mentor in the ALIA Mentoring Scheme. Her publications and presentations reflect her interest in library collaboration, maximising metadata to connect people and collections, resource sharing, and library standards development. She writes a regular column ‘Talking about standards’ in ALIA’s Incite magazine.
