Mr David Li AM
In the mid-’80s, David Li arrived in Australia as a student from Shanghai under two prestigious scholarships – the Australia China Council Award, and the BP scholarship from the Victoria College of the Arts, Melbourne University. He completed his postgraduate study under renowned violinist, the late Professor Nelli Shikolnikova. Following a stellar career in music, he entered the business sector.
Since then, his business has grown and is now a major building material distributor and manufacturer in Australia. His business involves property development and commercial investment. He’s managing director of Pasino Investments Pty Ltd, and Pacific Group.
David has served as a leader in bringing together Australia and the world through the universal language of music, arts and education, and has been passionate in his philanthropic pursuits.
David is the Deputy Chairman of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and served as the board director since 2013. He founded the ‘East meets West’ series of concerts, which includes its annual Chinese New Year concert.Many of these performances were broadcast to China and internationally, attracting an audience of more than 200 million.
David is a board member of the 3MBS Radio Corporation, recognising the importance of radio to promote music, and the station’s not-for-profit mandate.
He’s has also made an exceptional contribution towards Opera Australia, donating generously to support its Young Artists Program, and the productions of Tosca, Faust and Madam Butterfly.
A member of the Monash University Philanthropy Campaign Council, David signed an agreement in 2017 with the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash to create the David Li music excellence award for the bachelor’s degree in music, as well as the East meets West Music Scholarship for Master of Arts.
In 2019, David was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his services to the performing arts.
David is married to Angela, an accomplished pianist. They have two children.
