Professor Lushan Charles Qin OAM
Graduating from Yunnan University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, Charles worked in the Foreign Affairs Department of Yunnan Education Commission for 3 years prior to migrating to Australia. Armed with a Graduate Diploma of Interpreting and Translating from Deakin University and NAATI accreditations in 1992, Charles established Chin Communications, a specialist translation company, in Melbourne when there was little business between Australia and China – a brave move at the time.
Fast forward to the new millennium and Chin Communications has become Australasia’s largest specialist Chinese communications company with an in-house team of translators, interpreters, marketers and linguists and demands have grown along with China’s increasing importance to Australia.
As the Managing Director of Chin, Charles was awarded membership of AIIC in 2004 – the International Association of Conference Interpreters (the only Chinese Interpreter in Australia to achieve this until recently) and with it NAATI Level 5 accreditation. Charles has interpreted for world leaders including: George W Bush and Bill Clinton, all Chinese presidents since Jiang Zemin, and all Australian Prime Ministers since John Howard at meetings, bilaterals and conferences, including all Presidential visits to Australia, also many visits to China by Australian ministers and VIPs.
Since 2011 Charles has been the Chief Interpreter for ANZSOG – Australia and New Zealand School of Government’s China Advanced Leadership Program involving 3 weeks of Simultaneous Interpreting every year and leading the team including speeches by Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers and high level engagement. He has also interpreted at major world events including: Olympic Games, G20, APEC, Boao Forum, UN Conferences, and Australia Week in China. To Australia’s benefit, he was at the table for many rounds of negotiations for the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement.
Many important publications in the China-Australia space have also been translated by Charles, including the Mining JORC code and chapters of the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement. Charles is President of the Chinese Interpreters and Translators Association of Australia, on the Executive Committee of the Australia China Business Council (Victoria), the Advisory Board to Executive Wealth Circle and on the board of Laurel International and a member of the Editorial Committee, CTPC Translation Studies Library, China Publishing Group and China Translation & Publishing Corporation.
He is a Senior AUSIT practitioner and he guest lectures at Australian universities. Charles is a Visiting Professor to Sichuan University, Tianjin Foreign Studies University and Kunming University of Science and Technology, as well as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has won awards from industry including “Excellence in Interpreting”.
Charles was instrumental in setting up the Chin Communications Master Scholarship for Interpreters/Translators at Monash in 2012 to celebrate 20 years in business and to support the industry. Since then Chin Communications has been engaging actively with the university whether in training, employing graduates and practicum students, and in renewing the scholarship every 3 years. Charles has also encouraged other Chinese business people to get involved in philanthropy at the university.
In 2016 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for service to international relations, particularly through translation and interpretation.
