Unit mode

The unit mode describes the way the unit’s teaching activities are delivered (e.g. on-campus, online, flexible, immersive or blended teaching). You’re required to attend all your teaching activities as scheduled unless they're listed as optional in your timetable.

In addition to your teaching activities, you’ll find resources and activities to support your learning in Moodle.

You can check the attendance mode of a unit in the Monash Handbook (under Offerings in the unit entry) and a description for each attendance code is on the unit abbreviations page.

On-campus

All of your teaching activities are delivered in  person and on campus. You may also have activities to complete in your own time, including asynchronous lectures.

Example

  • Units with on-campus applied sessions and workshops, and online own-time lectures in Allocate+.

Online

All your teaching activities are online, including any scheduled assessments.

Flexible

Some of your teaching activities may give you an option to attend online or on campus. You’ll need to choose how you’d like to attend in Allocate+ when you’re creating your timetable.

If you’re an international student on a student visa, flexible units count as on-campus units for visa requirement purposes. Keep in mind, you’re expected to attend any on-campus activities in person as a condition of your visa.

Examples

  • Units with online or on-campus seminars, and on-campus or online workshops – you can choose how you’ll attend these when you finalise your timetable at the start of the teaching period.
  • Units that have on-campus workshops and applied sessions, but offer at least one time slot online in real time in Allocate+ – once your timetable has been finalised, you’d need to attend the activity as scheduled (you can’t choose a different way to attend later on).

Immersive

Your unit includes experiential teaching/learning which occurs mostly outside of a classroom or campus environment.

Example

  • A clinical unit that includes tutorials in a practical environment such as a hospital.

Blended

Your unit has a mix of on-campus and online activities. In most cases, you won’t be able to choose between attending online or in person.

Example

  • Units with weekly workshops, with some workshops held on campus, and held online in real time.

Block

Your unit’s teaching activities are condensed over a short span of weeks or days.

Examples

  • Units that run 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, for two weeks.
  • Units that run every Wednesday and Thursday for six weeks.

Changing your unit attendance mode

Some units have multiple attendance mode options. If this is the case, you can change your unit attendance mode in the Web Enrolment System (WES) – just make sure you do so before the last day to add units in WES:

  1. Log into WES.
  2. Under Enrolment / Re-Enrolment, click Unit Enrolment to view your units.
  3. Next to the unit you want to change, click Change in the Action column. If there's only one offering of the unit, the Change link won't be available.
You’ll then see a list of all the available options for the unit.
  4. Click the radio button next to the attendance mode you want, then click Accept.
This change will appear in the Enrolment Form.
  5. If you want to confirm the change, click SUBMIT ENROLMENT.
You’ll get a transaction number to confirm the change (on the screen and in an email).
